CHESAPEAKE CORPORATION CELEBRATES ITS 75TH ANNIVERSARY

RICHMOND, Va., Oct. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Chesapeake Corporation (NYSE: CSK) will be joined by Virginia's Gov. L. Douglas Wilder for a celebration of the company's 75th anniversary at a special Founder's Day event planned for 3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 24, at Chesapeake Paper Products Company in West Point, Va.
Wilder will give the keynote address to Chesapeake employees and retirees, members of the West Point and surrounding communities, Chesapeake customers and suppliers, and guests from around the world.
The company, originally called The Chesapeake Corporation, was founded by Elis Olsson, a Swedish-born paper maker. Olsson is recognized as a pioneer in the industry and was instrumental in introducing the sulfate (kraft) process using Southern pine in America.
Chesapeake was chartered on Oct. 25, 1918 in West Point. It paid its first dividend in 1926, beginning a tradition of paying dividends unbroken except for the Depression years of 1931 and 1932. In 1944, Chesapeake stock was offered for the first time on the New York Stock Exchange.
Today, Chesapeake Corporation, a Fortune 500 company headquartered in Richmond, is a paper and packaging company. Chesapeake's primary businesses are tissue and kraft paper products and packaging. Other businesses include consumer tissue products, land development and wood products.
Chesapeake entered the packaging business in 1946. Today, Chesapeake Packaging Co. subsidiaries and divisions produce corrugated boxes, graphic packaging and displays.
Chesapeake entered the tissue business in 1985 with the acquisition of Wisconsin Tissue in Menasha, Wis. In 1990, an expansion at Wisconsin Tissue was completed, and capacity was increased more than 70 percent.
