CHEMICAL STAGES BIGGEST BLITZ IN BANKING HISTORY; 1,000-PLUS BANKERS CALL ON SMALL BUSINESSES IN FIVE STATES

NEW YORK, April 29 /PRNewswire/ -- More than a thousand Chemical Bankers surged throughout five states today, knocking on the doors of 3,000 small and mid-sized businesses in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania and Texas. Their mission: letting businesses know that there's no credit crunch at Chemical.
The bankers also helped launch Hall of Famer Tom Seaver as Chemical's business spokesman by delivering special Seaver baseballs and baseball cards to their prospective customers. Senior officers of the nation's third largest bank -- including President Walter V. Shipley, Vice Chairman Edward D. Miller and Senior Executive Vice President William H. Turner -- also made sales calls.
Chemical Banking Corporation (NYSE: CHL) is a leader in lending to small and mid-sized companies. In the downstate ten-county New York region, for example, the bank is the acknowledged market leader, doing business with 56 percent of middle market businesses.
"This is a wake-up call to anyone who feels that the banks aren't out there and aren't anxiously looking for new business. We're making sure everybody in our markets knows that we are eager to lend, and that our lending officers want to help growing companies," said Frank Lourenso, executive vice president of the Middle Market Banking Group, which services businesses with $1 million to $500 million in annual sales.
Lourenso noted that Chemical is the most aggressive bank in calling on customers and prospects. "Lenders who sit in their offices will not get the business," he noted. "The potential for future business from today's blitz appears strong, as a significant percentage of the companies we called on have been rated as strong prospects."
