CHECKPOINT SYSTEMS, INC. ACQUIRES CANADIAN DISTRIBUTOR THOROFARE, N.J., Nov. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Checkpoint Systems, Inc.
(NASDAQ: CHEK) has acquired Checkpoint Canada, its Canadian distributor since 1984.
In making the announcement today, A.E. Wolf, Checkpoint's president and chief executive officer, said, "The acquisition of our Canadian distributor is part of Checkpoint's aggressive strategy to increase market share globally. Going direct in the Canadian marketplace will allow us to consolidate our marketing efforts and be even more competitive in expanding our customer base there." Checkpoint Canada, headquartered in Toronto, has offices in Vancouver, Calgary and Montreal. The distributor markets Checkpoint's comprehensive Electronic Article Merchandising(SM) (EAM)(SM) product line to the Canadian retail industry, including supermarkets, mass merchandisers, drugstores, bookstores and video stores. EAM systems consist of paper-thin disposable targets placed on products to protect them from theft, deactivation equipment at checkout, and sensors at store exits and entrances to detect the unauthorized removal of protected products. According to Robert Burkitt, president of Checkpoint Canada, the acquisition will enhance the company's position with Canadian retailers. "With the backing of a successful, multi-national company like Checkpoint Systems, Checkpoint Canada will be able to bring the company's technological breakthroughs and product enhancements more quickly to the marketplace. We are now introducing Impulse(SM) source tagging to our customers, a program which Checkpoint pioneered and is leading the industry in implementing," said Burkitt. Impulse source tagging embeds Checkpoint's security targets into products or their packaging before they reach the retail level. Checkpoint Systems, Inc. offers a variety of security and loss prevention solutions for the protection of assets in diverse market applications. As the leading developer of advanced microprocessor- and radio frequency-based security systems, the company has more than 20 years' experience in the loss prevention industry. Checkpoint's Electronic Article Merchandising and Electronic Access Control systems are based on its Electronic Signatures(R) technology which makes unique radio signals assignable to items or people. Using detectable, paper- thin, disposable targets that can be activated and deactivated, the company's EAM systems are installed in more than 60,000 retail locations worldwide. /delval/ -0- 11/9/92 /CONTACT: Glenda Laudisio, 609-384-2411, or Kevin Dowd, 416-837-2121, both of Checkpoint Systems, or Kathleen Carroll of KMC Communications, 215-539-1052, for Checkpoint Systems/ (CHEK) CO: Checkpoint Systems, Inc.; Checkpoint Canada ST: New Jersey, Ontario IN: CPR REA SU:
