CHECKMATE ELECTRONICS RECEIVES SEVERAL SIGNIFICANT ORDERS FOR CMR 400 MICR CHECK READERS

ROSWELL, Ga., Nov. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Checkmate Electronics, Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: CMEL) today announced that it has received several significant orders for its CMR 400 MICR check readers.
In making the announcement, management stated that J.C. Penney (NYSE: JCP) has placed an order with Checkmate Electronics for an additional 9,000 CMR 400M MICR check readers to be installed as a phase two project in its smaller, suburban area stores. This order will bring the total number of Checkmate readers installed in J.C. Penney locations to over 45,000.
Checkmate also announced that the company has received an order from Elder-Beerman and Nieman Marcus to complete the rollout of check readers at all points of sale within each of their respective retail establishments. Additionally, Checkmate received an initial order from Shopko for over 1,000 units for implementation of its phase one check reader program. It is anticipated that these orders, which total in excess of $2.0 million, will be shipped by mid-February 1994. The company has completed delivery of its check readers to the R.H. Macy Company for installation in its New York and New Jersey Macy's stores. Additionally, it has completed delivery of its check readers to Woolworth's Kinney Services division for installation of the readers at over 1,300 stores in their Athletic Express, Champs, Foot Locker, Foot Quarters, Going to the Game, Kinney Shoes and Lady Foot Locker divisions.
Raymond J. Homa, Checkmate's president and chief executive officer, stated: "I am extremely pleased with our J.C. Penney partnership and the success of their check authorization project. We are proud of the confidence that major retailers across the country have placed in Checkmate and its products and are committed to strive toward an objective of exceeding customer expectations." Homa further commented: "The timing of these orders will assist in keeping the company out of the year-end doldrums normally experienced by hardware suppliers dealing with the retail community. Retailers are generally more concerned about making their holiday and white sale figures at the end of one calendar year and the beginning of the next; therefore, implementation of new projects commences after these key sales times."
In closing, Homa said, "We feel that Checkmate's recent achievements reflect management's ongoing efforts to enhance the marketing program which will enable the company to capitalize on the large untapped market for check readers."
Checkmate Electronics designs, manufactures and markets MICR (magnetic ink character recognition) readers, analyzers, and other related products. The company's primary product, MICR check readers, utilizes patented technology to read the magnetic ink characters that are encoded on checks, travelers checks and other documents and automatically input the information into the user's data processing system. The check readers also measure the magnetic signal strength of the magnetic characters to assure that the characters conform to applicable MICR quality standard for MICR systems, thereby helping eliminate fraud by detecting most counterfeit and visually altered documents. Checkmate markets its products to a broad base of customers including major mass retail merchandisers, supermarkets, convenience stores, independent retailers, banks, and other financial institutions throughout the United States.
