ROSWELL, Ga., Nov. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Checkmate Electronics, Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: CMEL) today announced the acquisition of the proprietary and patented signature capture and verification technology from Electronic Signatures, Inc.
The technology was previously marketed under the trademark "SIGN/ON," which was also acquired as part of the transaction.
"We are most excited about the acquisition of this technology," commented Ray Homa, Checkmate's president and chief executive officer. "The addition of this technology, coupled with our manufacturing capabilities will allow us to expand our base of cost effective solutions for the retail point-of-sale. Signature capture is an important element in our commitment to bring the retail community a comprehensive platform of devices to expedite the payment process and increase customer service."
Homa further stated: "We are equally pleased that Rod Beatson, a pioneer in this sophisticated technology, will be joining Checkmate as vice president of our new Signature Products division. Additionally, Mark Kelty and Marc Riley, the two engineers responsible for the product's development, will become part of the Checkmate team."
Checkmate Electronics designs, manufactures and markets MICR (magnetic ink character recognition) readers, analyzers, and other related products. The company's primary product, MICR check readers, utilizes patented technology to read the magnetic ink characters that are encoded on checks, travelers checks and other documents and automatically input the information in to the user's data processing system. The check readers also measure the magnetic signal strength of the magnetic characters to assure that the characters conform to applicable MICR quality standard for MICR systems, thereby helping eliminate fraud by detecting most counterfeit and visually altered documents. Checkmate markets its products to a broad base of customers including major mass retail merchandisers, supermarkets, convenience stores, independent retailers, banks, and other financial institutions throughout the United States.
