CHECKERS NAMES WHITE CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER

CLEARWATER, Fla., Jan. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- James F. White, Jr., Toledo, Ohio, today was named chief operating officer of Checkers Drive-in Restaurants, Inc., (NASDAQ: CHKR) headquartered here.
In making the announcement, Founder, President and Chief Executive Officer James E. Mattei said, "Jim White has been intimately involved with Checkers since December 1990. He has the organizational skills and business acumen to help Checkers maintain our business plan that calls for continued substantial growth."
White is a prominent Toledo attorney and partner in Shumaker, Loop & Kendrick, which also has offices in Tampa, Fla., and Charlotte, N.C., as well as being a well-known civic and business leader.
He will assume his new duties as COO on Feb. 15. White has served as Checkers general corporate counsel since January 1991.
"I've wanted Jim White to be on board as an integral part of our organization for a long time," Mattei said. "He has tremendous organizational ability that is invaluable to a company like ours that has grown at more than 100 percent per year. Jim's been a big part of our growth and will play an even more prominent role in the future."
Checkers, which finished 1992 as one of the over-the-counter markets' strongest performers, increased revenues by 118 percent and earnings by 289 percent for the first nine months of 1992 over the comparable period in 1991. Year end 1992 figures have not been released.
Checkers' system-wide sales through the first nine months ended Sept. 30, 1992, were $117,221,000 compared to $49,523,000 for the same period a year earlier. Company revenues during the same period in 1992 were $43,894,000 with earnings of $7.5 million, up from revenues of $19,511,000 and earnings of $1.9 million a year earlier.
"Jim White is one of the finest, most capable individuals we've ever worked with. We feel he will be a very instrumental part of our management team," Mattei said. "As always, Checkers is planning for the future, and Jim White will be a great addition to our already strong management team."
White's first work with Checkers involved the company's initial public stock offering in November 1991. Since then, the company had a second offering in May 1992, and its stock has split twice.
Checkers develops, produces, owns, operates and franchises quick- service "double drive-thru" restaurants that feature a limited menu. From two restaurants in Mobile, Ala., in 1988, the company has grown into a chain of more than 220 franchise and company-operated restaurants, currently located in 14 states.
"I don't think I know of anyone who brings so many abilities to a job," said Herbert G. Brown, chairman. "He has impressive educational credentials and has practical experience in law, finance, real estate, the food business and organizational management."
According to Brown, "Jim White has been a great civic leader in the Toledo area and I am sure he will bring that same spirit of civic leadership to Florida and the Tampa Bay area."
White, who will report directly to Mattei, has been a member of Toledo's Shumaker, Loop & Kendrick law firm for 25 years. He is a partner and has served as chairman of the firm's management committee.
