CHECKERS DRIVE-IN RESTAURANTS ANNOUNCES APPOINTMENTS

 CLEARWATER, Fla., Jan. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- James E. Mattei, president and chief executive officer, today announced that Dale A. Naftzger has been appointed vice president of operations and John E. Hellriegel has been appointed vice president franchising for Checkers Drive-In Restaurants, Inc. (NASDAQ: CHKR). "Dale Naftzger and John Hellriegel have significant experience in working with aggressive growth food companies, and will augment our proven management team," Mattei said.
 Naftzger is a 20 year industry veteran with a broad background in management. He has served in key management roles during the growth stages of companies such as Ponderosa Steak Houses, Wendy's International and Taco Bell Corporation. Naftzger served as vice president of Operations for Wendy's International's southern zone where he was responsible for the management of company and franchised restaurants in 20 states. For the past five years he has been zone vice president for Pepsi's Taco Bell division.
 Naftzger is a former resident of Roswell, Ga. where he served on the board of directors of the Atlanta Metropolitan Better Business Bureau, and as vice chairman of the membership committee. He is a graduate of Dakota Wesleyan University, from which he holds a B.A. degree in business.
 Hellriegel has over 25 years experience in the food and franchise industry having spent 20 years with Dunkin Donuts, Inc. where he served as vice president franchise operations and was responsible for operations on the east coast and Puerto Rico. His most recent position was vice president -- International Operations, responsible for franchise development and operations in over 20 countries around the world.
 Hellriegel has lectured on international franchising at the graduate and undergraduate level and on franchise and strategic alliance management for the American Management Association.
 Hellriegel is a graduate of Cornell University, from which he holds a B.S. degree and from Georgia State University where he holds a M.B.A.
 Mattei further indicated, "Checkers continues to make investments in quality management to implement our aggressive growth strategy."
 Checkers has been experiencing phenomenal growth, having doubled revenues to $88.6 million and tripled earnings to $10.7 million in 1992. The company also increased the number of system-wide restaurants 74 percent to 223 in 1992. Checkers projects 155 new restaurants for 1993.
