CHECK WRITING DECLINED DURING MARCH COMPARED TO 1992

TAMPA, Fla., April, 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Equifax Check Services/Telecredit announced today that throughout the country, consumers spent 5.6 percent less via check during March 1993 than during the same period in 1992. This includes consumer spending at more than 100 of the nation's largest retail chains in various categories including toys, jewelry, apparel, department stores, sporting goods, auto parts and repair, and hardware.
 The results by region are:
-- Eight (8) State Northeast Region -- was down 6.1 percent
-- Ten (10) State Midwestern Region -- was down 5.5 percent
-- Ten (10) State Mountain Region -- was down 7.5 percent
-- Five (5) State Western Region -- was down 10 percent
-- Seventeen (17) State Southern Region -- was down 2.7 percent
(Note: Numbers are available by individual state upon request.)
Florida was one of the few states that represented a gain of 8.1 percent. California represented the largest decline at 10.2 percent. Other significant declines were reported from Illinois at 9.6 percent, Texas at 9.4 percent, and Ohio at 5.6 percent.
These declines are consistent with the Conference Board's survey of consumer confidence trends which have been declining over the last few months. Another contributing factor may be the late winter inclement weather.
Equifax Check Services/Telecredit is the largest check authorization company in the United States providing service to more than 100,000 retail points of sale. In 1992, Equifax Check Services/Telecredit authorized more than $11 billion. Revenues for 1992 were $117 million.
