CHASING MAVERICKS (PG) A TERRIFICALLY miscast Gerard Butler stars in yet another "mentor" movie, this one revolving around an ageing surfer dude, Frosty Hesson, who coaches a young lad to glory. And while the story is soggily generic, the surf scenes are something to behold.

Newcomer Johnny Weston is teenager Jay who, seeking escape from the burden of caring for his alcoholic mum (Elizabeth Shue), finds solace surfing in California, soon attracting the attentions of Hesson.

The plot is truly, utterly predictable - an unimaginative paint-by-numbers family drama - and Butler, who we're used to seeing in action roles, never manages to convince. But it's when young Jay faces wipeouts on the waves that things come alive.
