CHASE MANHATTAN LAUNCHES EXPANDED 'BONUS DOLLARS' CREDIT CARD PROGRAM WITH NATIONWIDE ADVERTISING

CHASE MANHATTAN LAUNCHES EXPANDED 'BONUS DOLLARS'
CREDIT CARD PROGRAM WITH NATIONWIDE ADVERTISING
NEW YORK, Oct. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- The Chase Manhattan Bank (USA) (NYSE: CMB), one of the nation's leading issuers of Visa and MasterCard(R) credit cards, today begins running television advertisements across the country to introduce its expanded Bonus Dollars rewards program.
More than 10 million cardmembers can now earn free flights and substantial discounts on travel, retail and catalog purchases just by using their Chase cards. Cardmembers earn one Bonus Dollar for every five dollars charged, and can redeem as few as 100 Bonus Dollars -- only $500 in spending -- for rewards. Since Bonus Dollars is based on an existing point system, many Chase cardmembers can select significant rewards they have already earned.
Chase conducted extensive research to understand the preferences of its cardmembers, who rated flexibility, variety, attainability, and simplicity their top priorities in a credit card rewards program.
"Our cardmembers continue to tell us they want a voice in what they get in their credit card. That's why the new Bonus Dollars program emphasizes choice and flexibility, something we try to give our cardmembers in everything we do," said Thomas C. Lynch, executive vice president of The Chase Manhattan Bank's credit card business. "The beauty of Bonus Dollars is that cardmembers can choose their own rewards from a broad range of brand-name travel, retail and catalog options."
Bonus Dollars contrasts sharply with rewards programs developed by other issuers, many of which have a narrow focus, require cardmembers to charge a lot to qualify for rewards, or offer only limited savings. Chase cardmembers can select a free flight, or discounts of up to 20 percent on the merchandise of their choice from popular companies they may already patronize, including Eddie Bauer, The Sharper Image (R) and Gump's.
Discounts of up to 35 percent are available on special travel packages for hotel accommodations and car rentals. More participants will be added in the months to come.
According to Mr. Lynch, Chase cardmembers will earn double Bonus Dollars when they use their cards in November and December. "We wanted to give our cardmembers something special for the holidays when they will be shopping more than at other times during the year," Mr. Lynch said. "They will be able to earn hundreds of dollars in savings or free rewards by using their Chase cards this season."
Mr. Lynch said he expects cardmembers to respond as positively to Bonus Dollars as they did to Chase's new credit card pricing, which enables eligible cardmembers to choose between a variable or a fixed annual percentage rate. "The volume of calls into our 800 number has more than doubled since we made the pricing announcement," he said. "And while pricing is important, today's consumers are evaluating credit cards based on the value of the total package. Chase cards offer consumers both fair pricing and desirable features that are easy to take advantage of -- a combination that's hard to find these days."
Two 30-second television spots and two 60-second radio spots created by Wells Rich Greene BDDP Inc. will air in Chase's eight advertising markets -- New York, Boston, Hartford, Philadelphia, Washington D.C., Miami, Minneapolis and San Francisco. The radio spots will begin airing later this week. Chase cardmembers were notified by mail about Bonus Dollars last month through a statement insert created by Grey Direct.
Chase cardmembers can redeem Bonus Dollars by completing the redemption form in their monthly statement, requesting either catalogs or certificates for catalog, retail or travel package rewards. Redemption forms also can be requested by calling Chase's customer service number, 800-441-7681.
