CHARTER AIRLINE LEASES McDONNELL DOUGLAS DC-9s TO BEGIN SERVICE IN MEXICO

LONG BEACH, Calif., Jan. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- A new charter airline has begun service in Mexico, serving vacation travelers with destinations on the Mexican Riviera and Cancun.
Servicios Aerolineas Mexicanas (SAM), based in Monterrey, Mexico, started service with a leased DC-9 Series 30 from McDonnell Douglas (NYSE: MD). The airline will add a second DC-9 in March and has plans to fly five of the intermediate range twin jets at peak service.
Alberto Morales, a director of SAM, said initial service by the airline will be from Monterrey, but later SAM will fly out of other Mexican cities and add service to Orlando, Fla., and Las Vegas, as more aircraft join the airline's fleet.
The McDonnell Douglas DC-9 will carry 110 passengers in a single class configuration on the SAM routes. Morales said he likes the five-across seating in the DC-9 because his passengers will prefer the combination of the three-and-two seat configuration.
"We are going to concentrate on passenger comfort in our fleet," Morales said. "We selected the DC-9 because it provides the highest quality, reliability and comfort to our customers. Their flights on SAM will be the first step of their vacations, and we want them to arrive at their destinations rested and in comfort."
McDonnell Douglas produced 976 DC-9s from 1965 to 1982. More than 900 are still in service around the world. The DC-9 fleet has flown approximately 16 billion miles, carrying more than 2.7 billion passengers.
