CHARLIE THE TUNA COMES ASHORE TO HELP HURRICANE VICTIMS
LONG BEACH, Calif., Aug. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- StarKist Seafood Division announced today that it is making a major product donation to help feed needy victims of Hurricane Andrew.
The donation consists of 5,000 cases (120,000 units) of Charlie's Lunch Kit(TM), a new StarKist product that is the first mix-it-yourself, self-contained tuna lunch kit.
The Charlie's Lunch Kits(TM) will be distributed in the Miami area through the Amerian Red Cross. Shipments are expected to arrive at relief sites within a few days. StarKist also is planning to donate product to hurricane victims in Louisiana.
Each kit contains a single-serve, pull-top can of StarKist Chunk Light or Chunk White Albacore tuna in Spring Water, packets of Heinz mayonnaise and relish, six whole-wheat crackers and a wooden stir spoon. An innovative two-part plastic container doubles as bowls, one for draining the spring water and one for mixing the tuna salad. The kit requires no refrigeration.
"Hurricane Andrew is a major disaster, and we want to do our part to help ease the victims' suffering," said Richard H. Wamhoff, president and COO of StarKist Seafood.
Charlie's Lunch Kits(TM) will be available nationally in supermarkets and vending locations in mid-September, but have been available in the Miami area since April.
"Our donation of Charlie's Lunch Kits(TM) will provide tuna salad, which is fresh, convenient and wholesome nutrition, to thousands of Andrew's unfortunate victims," Wamhoff said. "We hope StarKist can make at least a small difference in their recovery effort. Our hearts go out to them and we wish them all the best as they work to rebuild their homes, their businesses and their lives."
StarKist, headquartered in Long Beach, Calif., is a division of Star-Kist Foods, Inc., of Newport, Ky., an affiliate of the H.J. Heinz Company (NYSE: HNZ), Pittsburgh.
