CHAPMAN NAMED OMC CHAIRMAN

WAUKEGAN, Ill., Jan. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Outboard Marine Corp. (OMC) (NYSE: OM) today announced that James C. Chapman was elected chairman of the company's board of directors. Chapman also will continue as president and chief executive officer. He has been chief executive officer of the company since January 1990.
The action by OMC's board of directors had been planned since last April when the company announced that Charles D. Strang would be succeeded as chairman by Chapman in January 1993. Strang will continue as a member of the company's board of directors.
Chapman, 61, joined OMC in 1978 as director of manufacturing and was named vice president of manufacturing later that year. He was elected president and chief operating officer of OMC and a member of the company's board of directors in February 1985.
Chapman refocused OMC's manufacturing strategy during the 1980s, building a system of small, state-of-the-art factories to lower manufacturing costs and improve the quality of OMC's marine engines. He also was instrumental in the company's initiative to vertically integrate into boat manufacturing, which began in 1986. Today, with 20 boat brands, OMC is the second largest boat builder in the U.S., and a leading boat builder worldwide. In 1990 and 1991, he implemented a far- reaching restructuring of OMC to improve the company's efficiency, reduce its cost structure and increase its global competitiveness.
Prior to joining OMC, Chapman served in management positions in the automotive division of Rockwell International and with Chrysler Corp.
A native of Detroit, Chapman received a bachelor's degree (cum laude) in mechanical engineering from the University of Detroit, where he also earned a master's of business administration degree. He and his wife Bette reside in Antioch, Ill.
Outboard Marine Corp. is a leading international marketer of marine engines, boats, accessories and services.
