CHANGE TAKING PLACE AT RUSSELL

 CHANGE TAKING PLACE AT RUSSELL
ATLANTA, Nov. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- These days, when Herman J. Russell,

chairman, and Egbert L.J. Perry, president, of H.J. Russell & Company (RUSSELL) sit together, there is a lot being discussed about the future plans for RUSSELL.
The nation's fourth-largest black-owned business, with approximately 700 employees engaged in construction and real estate operations in 12 states, is completing a four-year-old plan, which was developed by Russell and Perry at the time Perry was named president over four years ago. Since then, a number of organizational changes have been put in place.
Perry, who at one time or another during his 13-year career with RUSSELL has been at the helm of each of the four operating affiliates before assuming the No. 2 spot in 1988, is leaving RUSSELL. Perry said, "Now it's time for me to pursue my vision." The move, originally planned for late 1993, is being accelerated by one year to accommodate Perry.
"Egbert and I have always spoken openly about his desire to do his own thing," said Herman. "He has always maintained a strong interest in working in the area of urban economic development in the United States, while pursuing economic opportunities abroad."
Perry is the ninth child in a family of 11 children, and he came to the United States in 1970 from the tiny eastern Caribbean island of Antigua (population 65,000). Perry completed his final two years of high school at Riverdale Country School in New York, at the age of 16, before attending the University of Pennsylvania where he received Bachelor and Master of Science degrees in civil engineering and a Master of Business Administration, majoring in finance and accounting, from the Wharton School. After a couple of years with large corporations in the Northeast, Perry joined RUSSELL on Jan. 7, 1980. Since that time, he has left an indelible mark on the RUSSELL organization (which recently celebrated its 40th year in business) and Atlanta's business and civic communities.
Russell had this to say about Perry: "When he joined the firm 13 years ago, he was an extremely bright, aggressive and confident 24-year- old with a tremendous work ethic. His contributions to the organization are numerous. Today, he is a seasoned business executive with a breadth of top level experience. He has been involved in the acquisition and divestiture of various businesses, as well as start-ups. He continues to hold an interest in a number of partnerships and outside corporations. Yet, in spite of his diverse business activities and responsibilities while with RUSSELL, he has managed to make more than his fair share of contributions to the community. I believe that his many positive attributes and his experience will make him successful in any undertaking."
Perry said: "I will be eternally grateful for the opportunity that Mr. Russell and the RUSSELL organization have afforded me, and I have made friends for life here. However, it is time to move on. Thus, I look forward to starting a new chapter in my life on January 1, 1993, as I continue to crystalize my vision and purpose."
Perry has served, or is currently serving, on the boards of The Atlanta Chamber of Commerce, United Way, Georgia Tech, Citizens Trust Bank, AMSCO Wholesalers, Inc., The APEX Museum, The Atlanta International School and Literacy Action, Inc.
