CHAMPION INDUSTRIES ACQUIRES CAROLINA CUT SHEETS OF SOUTH CAROLINA

HUNTINGTON, W.Va., Nov. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Champion Industries, Inc. (NASDAQ: CHMP) today announced that it has purchased certain assets of Tri-Star Printing, Inc. -- known as Carolina Cut Sheets -- of Timmonsville, S.C. Champion paid $248,500 in cash for those assets.
Marshall T. Reynolds, chairman of Champion, said this fifth acquisition in six months "materially enhances our ability to compete in the business forms market." For example, Reynolds said, "We can now participate effectively in the truly booming market encompassing the Carolinas."
Reynolds welcomed Carolina Cut Sheets founder Don Hill and manager Jim Hill to the Champion family. "These men bring not only their expertise and their business to Champion, but also extensive knowledge of the people and the markets within the Carolinas." he said. Champion will operate its new Carolina Cut Sheets organization as an independent subsidiary, blending its products with those of other Champion firms. Carolina Cut Sheets will sell its existing products through Champion's six other printing divisions in addition to its own dealer network. Carolina Cut Sheets also will offer continuous and snapout business forms manufactured by the parent company to increase opportunities for rapid sales growth.
Don Hill said this new combination of companies means "we can shoot for the moon." In the new arrangement, "we'll bring our cut sheet expertise and customers to Champion, which, in turn, will provide an infusion of resources, drive and sales capabilities," Hill said.
Champion, which completed its initial public offering of NASDAQ-listed common stock on Jan. 28, 1993, had sales of over $27 million in its most recently reported fiscal year. Carolina Cut Sheets revenues have approximated $1 million per year.
Among Champion's most recent acquisitions have been Bourque Printing, Inc., of Baton Rouge, La.; Garrison Brewer, an office products firm in Marietta, Ohio; and Dallas Printing Co. of Jackson, Miss.
Champion Industries is a major commercial printer, business form manufacturer and supplier of office products and office furniture in its regional markets of West Virginia, eastern and central Kentucky, southern Ohio and Louisiana. The company is headquartered in Huntington.
