CHAMBERS OPENS NEW AREA AT MONROEVILLE, PA., LANDFILL
PITTSBURGH, Nov. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Chambers Development Company, Inc., (AMEX: CDVA, CDVB) reported today that its Monroeville, Pa., landfill near Pittsburgh is fully operational.
Following Thursday's certification by Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resources (DER) officials, Chambers began accepting municipal solid waste today on a new double-synthetically lined landfill area. The area is permitted to receive an average of 1,500 tons per day of solid waste.
Company officials said the landfill will accept only western Pennsylvania waste.
This first cell is constructed with a double liner system consisting of a 60 mil polyethylene liner, a 60 mil polyethylene secondary liner, a double-geonet leachate detection zone between the liners and an 18-inch protective cover and leachate collection layer on top of the primary synthetic liner.
Last year, Chambers received a permit from the DER for 37 acres of landfill area at its Monroeville landfill. The 10-acre cell opened today is the first working area under that permit.
"We are pleased to be able to provide environmentally secure waste disposal services to western Pennsylvania and we will continue to work closely with the DER on all issues regarding our landfills and the strict enforcement of environmental laws and regulations in the commonwealth," said Alexander Rangos, Chambers' executive vice president of operations.
Since 1989, host fees paid by Chambers to Monroeville have totaled more than $600,000; business privilege and mercantile tax is more than $60,000; occupational privilege and wage tax paid by Chambers employees since 1989 have totaled more than $15,000; the value of a 25 percent discount for Monroeville to dispose of its refuse at the landfill has saved the municipality in excess of $115,000.
"Ongoing host fees paid to Monroeville at the permitted volume amount to $400,000 annually," said Steve McCarthy, Chambers' vice president of Northern Region.4blrntialQ 2 M z9

"In 1992, it is expected that the landfill will generate approximately $537,000 in revenue for Monroeville ($35,000 in business privilege tax, $102,000 in property tax and $400,000 in host fees.) The continued operation of the Monroeville landfill guarantees Monroeville and western Pennsylvania residents additional years of environmentally sound disposal and a source of revenue for the municipality," McCarthy said.
"The Monroeville landfill is a vital part of the community and has been for 20 years and will continue to be an important asset to Monroeville by providing ecologically sound and economical disposal for the region," McCarthy said.
