CHAMBERS DEVELOPMENT OPENS NEW ATLANTA LANDFILL

CHAMBERS DEVELOPMENT OPENS NEW ATLANTA LANDFILL
PITTSBURGH, May 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Chambers Development Company,

Inc., (AMEX: CDVA, CDVB) has announced that its new Atlanta landfill is fully operational.
Chambers' Atlanta Landfill, Inc. today began accepting refuse on its new synthetically lined landfill. The area, which is located within a previously undeveloped 53-acre site, is expected to eventually receive an average of 650 tons per day of solid waste.
The facility, located in northwest Atlanta, is the first site permitted within the city limits that meets new Georgia and federal regulations.
"This regional landfill has been designed to bring to the city of Atlanta and the state of Georgia a tremendous advance in solid waste disposal technology that will provide needed refuse capacity for Atlanta and Georgia residents," said Alexander Rangos, Chambers' executive vice president. "One factor that makes this project especially meaningful is that it gives us the opportunity to demonstrate the environmentally correct means to dispose of waste in Georgia."
According to Jose Urrutia, Chambers' regional engineer in Georgia, the Atlanta landfill has been constructed with a composite liner consisting of a geomembrane liner over a bentonite matting and will also employ a leachate collection system. Leachate generated during the operation of the facility will be treated on site by the use of a leachate pre-treatment facility and its effluents will be disposed at a local wastewater treatment facility. The leachate pre-treatment concept is a first for landfills in Georgia.
A total of 29 monitoring points for ground and surface waters surround the site.
Additionally, a combination of security systems has been installed at the facility to prevent the dumping of illegal wastes at the landfill.
"We intend to work diligently with the Georgia Environmental Protection Division and the city of Atlanta to be responsive to the concerns of residents in the area and establish a confidence in Chambers' commitment to environmental integrity," said Brenda Head, Chambers' Georgia corporate development manager.
According to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, approximately 50 percent of the 138 municipally operated landfills and 13 privately operated landfills will be filled to capacity within the next three years.
"This facility becomes even more important in light of those facts and meets an important need to get new landfills sited and under permit in Georgia," Rangos said.
Chambers Development Company, Inc., headquartered in Pittsburgh, is a leading environmental firm offering services in landfill and transfer station development and recycling, as well as the collection, transportation and disposal of residential, commercial, non-hazardous industrial and medical solid wastes.
