CHAMBER OF DEPUTIES OF THE CHILEAN CONGRESS VOTES ON LOCAL TELEPHONE COMPANIES' PARTICIPATION IN THE LONG DISTANCE MARKET

SANTIAGO, Chile, Nov. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Yesterday, the Lower Chamber voted on the telecommunications bill, as discussed in a press release issued by Compania de Telefonos de Chile (NYSE: CTC) yesterday (note to editors: NY019 on Tuesday, Nov. 9).
Regarding the central issue of the telecommunications bill, the participation of local telephone companies in the long distance market, the Lower Chamber voted in favor of the vertical integration of the telecommunications market, although the necessary quorum to make the vote binding was not reached. However, the vote of 36 in favor vs. 33 against reflects the Deputies' disposition to rule in the same way as the Antitrust Commission did in April 16 this year.
The necessary quorum was also not reached in the tie vote (35 vs. 35) on the total telecommunications market segmentation proposal of the Lower Chamber Telecommunications Sub-Committee.
According to yesterday's events, the draft bill will continue the legislative process in the Senate.
Compania de Telefonos de Chile, the first South American company to list its shares on the New York Stock Exchange, is the largest telecommunications enterprise in Chile providing local, long distance and international telephone services in 77 percent of the country's territory where 92 percent of Chile's population resides. Additionally, the company operates a cellular network in two principal metropolitan areas of Chile, Santiago and Valparaiso.
