 PITTSBURGH, Aug. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Paritosh M. Chakrabarti,


Chemicals Group vice president of research and development since 1987, has been elected vice president, science and technology, of PPG Industries (NYSE: PPG).
 He succeeds Joseph E. Rowe, vice president and chief scientist, who retires Sept. 1.
 Chakrabarti, 52, will be responsible for providing leadership and direction for PPG's technical and information systems operations, establishing priorities and resource commitment for operating-group research and development portfolios, and coordinating and providing functional direction for group R&D and engineering departments.
 He joined PPG's Chemicals Group in 1982 as director of research and development after 10 years with GAF Corp., where he had been technical director of chemical products from 1977. He previously held research and development posts with FMC Corp. and taught at Michigan Technological University.
 A native of Myanmar (formerly Burma), Chakrabarti has bachelor's and master's degrees in chemistry and a doctorate in organic chemistry from Calcutta (India) University, did post-doctoral work at England's Hull University and at Ohio State University, and attended the advanced management program of the Harvard University School of Business.
 He was a member of the Science and Technology Task Force of the Pennsylvania Economic Development Partnership Board, and is a member of the Industrial Research Institute, New York Academy of Science, Council for Chemical Research, the American Chemical Society, American Institute of Chemists, Society of Chemical Industry and Society of Industrial Microbiology.
 Rowe, 65, joined PPG in 1987 as the company's top technology officer. He was formerly vice chairman and chief technical officer of Gould, Inc., which he joined in 1982 as executive vice president, research and defense systems.
 Rowe previously was corporate vice president of technology and then vice president and general manager of the Control Systems and Custom Semiconductor divisions of Harris Corp. He was chairman of Shared Applications, Inc., from 1970 until it was acquired by Harris in 1978.
 He was provost of Case Western Reserve University from 1976 to 1978, and dean of engineering and vice provost the previous two years. From 1955 to 1974 he was on the faculty of the University of Michigan, the last six years as chairman of the electrical and computer engineering department.
 Rowe is a member of the boards of the Allegheny Singer Research Institute, Carnegie Science Center, Blood Science Foundation of the Central Blood Bank, Pittsburgh High Technology Council and the Ben Franklin Partnership Program.
 He is also a member of the Carnegie Mellon Research Institute advisory board, the national advisory committee of the University of Michigan and the board of visitors for the faculty of arts and sciences of the University of Pittsburgh.
 A native of Detroit, Rowe received a bachelor's degree in mathematics and bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Michigan.
