CHAIRMAN AND CHIEF EXECUTIVE OF GREAT WESTERN,
 JAMES F. MONTGOMERY, MAKES STATEMENT
CHATSWORTH, Calif., Oct. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- James F. Montgomery, chairman and chief executive, Great Western Financial Corp. (NYSE: GWF), today made the following statement regarding the death yesterday of Jay Janis, president, California League of Savings Institutions:
"Jay Janis was a good businessman, an industry leader, and a public servant who genuinely worked to serve the public. Jay went about his work with energy, intelligence and integrity. He was not afraid to tackle large problems, and he did so with passion and commitment.
"The very real problems in the thrift business in the 1980s obscured the fact that this industry was built by people who believed that you could serve the public, run a profitable business, and do so in an ethical way. Jay Janis was one of those people.
"All of us at Great Western will miss him very much."
