CHAIRMAN AND CEO OF McDONNELL DOUGLAS SENDS LETTER TO PRESIDENT BUSH
ST. LOUIS, July 8 /PRNewswire/ -- John F. McDonnell, chairman and chief executive officer of McDonnell Douglas Corp. (NYSE: MD), today sent a letter to President Bush re-emphasizing the importance of moving forward with the Saudi Arabian request for 72 F-15s because the F-15 production line is shutting down and layoffs have begun.
The text of the letter follows:
 "Dear Mr. President,
"In our 16 March letter to you, chief executive officers of United Technologies, Hughes Aircraft, Northrop, General Electric, and Martin Marietta joined me in asking for early consideration of the sale of F-15s to Saudi Arabia.
"Today our request has new urgency. The layoffs we predicted if the sale was not notified in April have begun. Last month more than one thousand highly skilled aerospace workers associated with the F-15 lost their jobs, and thousands more will be out of work in the coming months as our production line closes down and suppliers deliver their final parts.
"If the sale of F-15s to Saudi Arabia is not approved this summer, half of the 40,000 aerospace workers who build F-15s will be laid off by early next year, and an equal number of service- related jobs across the country will be at risk. Also, nearly 60 percent of the more than 2,000 F-15 subcontractors and suppliers will no longer have sustained production. It's that simple.
"Mr. President, again we urge you in the strongest terms to notify Congress of the sale."
