CF MOTORFREIGHT OPENS $15-MILLION CHICOPEE CONSOLIDATION CENTER EXPANSION

MENLO PARK, Calif., April 13 /PRNewswire/ -- CF MotorFreight, one of the nation's largest intermediate and long-haul trucking companies, has completed work on a $15-million expansion of its Chicopee, Mass. consolidation center.
Construction on a new 46,000 square-foot building, located on the lot adjacent to the existing facility, began six months ago. The center, located at 106 New Lombard Rd. employs 460 people. The new addition increases the size of the consolidation center to 80,000 square feet and adds 95 more loading doors to the existing 100 doors.
CF MotorFreight uses the facility to serve a variety of businesses -- from computer manufacturing to the paper industry -- throughout Massachusetts, Connecticut, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine and Rhode Island.
A consolidation center is a central redistribution hub for filling trucks with freight shipments on the way to their final destination. CF MotorFreight is the only major less-than-truckload (LTL) carrier with a redistribution hub in New England.
"We have made this substantial investment in our Chicopee facility because we are optimistic about growth opportunities in the New England region," said Robert H. Lawrence, president and chief executive officer of CF MotorFreight. "The strategic location of our consolidation center places us within 400 miles of more than 26 percent of the U.S. and Canadian population."
Another phase of expansion to the center, scheduled to begin later this month and be completed by the end of the year, will add 28 more loading doors. The facility is one of 28 consolidation centers in the company's nationwide terminal network.
Tessier Associates of West Springfield, Mass., served as the architects and engineers for the project and the Fontaine Brothers, also of West Springfield, acted as the contractors. All work on the project was union contracted.
CF MotorFreight provides intermediate and long-haul transportation of LTL freight, which are commercial and industrial shipments generally weighing less than 10,000 pounds.
Through it freight-flow system of 600 terminals and 22,000 employees, CF MotorFreight serves virtually every business address in North America, including the United States, Mexico, Canada, the Caribbean and Central and Latin America. A subsidiary of Consolidated Freightways Inc. (NYSE: CNF), CF MotorFreight is based in Menlo Park.
