CF MOTORFREIGHT DRIVERS 'PASS THE TEST'
 FOR NEW COMMERCIAL DRIVER LICENSE
MENLO PARK, Calif., March 31 /PRNewswire/ -- CF MotorFreight, one of North America's largest long-haul trucking companies, announced today that nearly all of its 13,000 drivers nationwide have qualified for the new federally mandated commercial driver license (CDL).
Effective April 1, 1992, new federal regulations require that all commercial truck drivers possess a CDL to continue driving. Enacted in the Commercial Motor Vehicle Safety Act of 1986 and administered by the Federal Highway Administration, the CDL program seeks to improve safety on the highways by tightening the requirements for obtaining a license to operate a commercial truck.
CF MotorFreight, a subsidiary of Consolidated Freightways Inc., (NYSE: CNF) has qualified more than 98 percent of its drivers for the CDL.
"We have been promoting the CDL program among our drivers for more than a year-and-a-half," said Peter D. Boulais, executive vice president-operations for CF MotorFreight.
"As a result, they have taken the appropriate measures to obtain a CDL before the April 1 deadline. We are proud of our drivers' accomplishments: They have proven why they are among the safest and most skilled professionals on the road."
Boulais added that operations would continue to run smoothly, with no interruptions in service.
The CDL program has three major elements:
-- It makes it illegal for commercial drivers to have more than one license.
-- It requires all commercial drivers to pass a knowledge and skills test about the vehicle they drive.
-- It establishes minimum standards for the removal and disqualification of commercial drivers.
CF MotorFreight helped its drivers prepare for the CDL exam by distributing study materials and holding regular safety meetings and training sessions.
Through its freight-flow system of 700 terminals and 23,000 employees, CF MotorFreight serves virtually every business address in North America, including the United States, Mexico, Canada, the Caribbean and Puerto Rico. CF MotorFreight is based in Menlo Park.
