CF MOTOR FREIGHT OPENS NEW NASHVILLE CONSOLIDATION CENTER

CF MOTOR FREIGHT OPENS NEW NASHVILLE CONSOLIDATION CENTER
NASHVILLE, Tenn., Nov. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- CF Motor Freight, one of the nation's major long-haul trucking companies, will open the doors to its new Nashville consolidation center today, one of the largest freight-processing terminals in the country.
The 118,000-square-foot, $20 million facility will employ 520 people and serve a wide variety of businesses throughout the Southeast, including consumer product manufacturers, makers of auto parts and distributors of office furniture.
"Nashville is one of only six U.S. cities located at the junction of three interstate highways, making it a key hub in the country's transportation network," said Robert H. Lawrence, president and chief executive officer of CF Motor Freight. "This new consolidation center will help meet the needs of a growing population in the Nashville area and help boost the strong entrepreneurial climate here."
Nashville's population has grown more than 11 percent in the past decade to 530,000. This growth has been fueled by the influx of new companies into the area, such as Saturn Corp., Nissan Motor Manufacturing Corp., Bridgestone Corp., American Airlines, Service Merchandise, and Tridon, an auto parts manufacturer.
Consolidation centers are central redistribution facilities for filling trucks with freight shipments on the way to their final destination.
CF Motor Freight's Nashville consolidation center will enhance the company's nationwide freight-flow network of 700 terminals and allow the company to meet the freight transportation needs of businesses throughout Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama and Kentucky.
Located on a 100-acre lot at 12805 Old Hickory Blvd. in Antioch, Tenn,. the consolidation center has 216 loading doors and a dock that stretches 1,300 feet in length -- the equivalent of one-quarter mile. In anticipation of future demand, the center is designed to expand to 426 doors.
CF Motor Freight has operated in Nashville since 1972 when it opened a 20-door terminal. Over the years, growing business volumes prompted the company to expand to larger facilities. The previous 140-door Nashville consolidation center at 40 Nance Lane opened in 1983.
Donald Billings, vice president of Southern Area operations for CF Motor Freight, said that the Nashville center will handle more than 700,000 shipments, weighing 675 million pounds next year.
"This new consolidation center will enhance service to our more than 4,000 customers in the area and strengthen transportation resources in the Southeast," said Billings. "We now are able to play a larger role in Tennessee's distribution network."
In January 1990, CF Motor Freight opened a 115,000-square-foot consolidation center in Memphis, Tenn. The facility employs more than 400 people and serves cities in six Southern states.
Like all CF Motor Freight facilities, the Nashville consolidation center is tied into the company's freight-flow system through a sophisticated nationwide computer freight tracking and data management network. The company's computer system enables customers to obtain instant status of their inbound or outbound shipments, as well as pricing, volume and other freight profile and logistics information that helps customers manage their businesses.
In addition, a newly developed computer-based image processing system enables CF Motor Freight customers to obtain electronic copies of their shipping documents in minutes.
CF Motor Freight provides intermediate and long-haul transportation of less-than-truckload freight, which are commercial and industrial shipments generally weighing less than 10,000 pounds.
Through its freight-flow system of 700 terminals and 23,000 employees, CF Motor Freight serves virtually every business in the United States and Canada, including Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico. The company also serves Mexico and the Caribbean. A subsidiary of Consolidated Freightways Inc., CF Motor Freight is based in Menlo Park, Calif.
