the Entertainment Capital of the World
LOS ANGELES, Calif. /PRNewswire/ -- International Cablecasting Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ: TUNE) (ICT(R)) has captured Los Angeles County, signing an exclusive agreement to provide Digital Music Express to multiple system operator (MSO) Century Communications Corp., announced ICT Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Jerry Rubinstein.
Owned by Century Communications Corp., Century Cable serves more than 900,000 basic cable subscribers nationwide, with 200,000 Los Angeles-area subscribers in such communities as Beverly Hills, Bel Air, Century City, West Hollywood, Santa Monica, Westwood, Pacific Palisades and Sherman Oaks, Calif. In addition to Los Angeles, Century operates more than 50 cable systems in 23 states and Puerto Rico.
In making the announcement at a shareholders meeting today, Rubinstein said that Century will launch Digital Music Express (DMX) this summer, with the premiere Los Angeles-area systems among the first to launch.
"We considered our digital options very carefully, taking a long hard look -- and listen -- to what was going on in the category," said Century Cable President Andrew Tow. "The longer and closer we looked, the more obvious the choice became. With DMX, we have aligned ourselves with the leader in the field, the only digital audio service that provides the cutting edge combination of programming, marketing and technology that we know our subscribers will demand."
Tom Oliver, president of ICT, noted, "We're especially pleased to receive Century's overwhelming vote of confidence. Century Cable very closely scrutinized both digital audio services and selected DMX based on its commitment to music programming and the company's unique commercial music capability.
"In addition, Century's demographic base is ideal for DMX, and we're obviously gratified that the service will achieve significant presence and visibility in the important and trend-setting Los Angeles market," Oliver added.
Stuart Lipson, Century vice president, programming and advertising sales, said that Century is expected to begin rolling out DMX in stages. "We feel confident that ICT continues to identify ways to properly market the service and we plan to capitalize on the digital audio leader's experience to date. This means our emphasis will be to provide Century customers with every opportunity to sample the product."
The nation's 16th largest cable operator, Connecticut-based Century Communications Corp. owns and operates 55 cable systems in 24 states and Puerto Rico, serving more than 900,000 basic subscribers. The company also owns five radio stations.
The flagship product of Los Angeles-based ICT, DMX provides 30 channels of continuous, Sony/Philips CD-standard audio programming. Launched in late 1991, it is now available in more than 400 cable systems in 42 states. Publicly traded on NASDAQ (TUNE), ICT is backed by some of the industry's leading players, including Tele-Communications Inc. (TCI), Scientific-Atlanta Inc., Viacom, KBLCOM, Scripps Howard, Colony Communications, Crown Media Inc., and Shaw Cablesystems of Canada.
