CENTRAL ILLINOIS PUBLIC SERVICE CO. ENDS LOCKOUT

SPRINGFIELD, Ill., Aug. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Central Illinois Public Service Co. (CIPS) ended the lockout of 1,000 employees represented by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 702, according to L. A. Dodd, senior vice president-operations. CIPS is the principal subsidiary of CIPSCO Incorporated (NYSE: CIP).
The announcement was made following discussions between CIPS and Local 702 negotiators in Effingham on Wednesday, Aug. 25.
Employees represented by IBEW Local 702 who work in the utility's three operating divisions are expected to return to work beginning 8 a.m. Monday, Aug. 30. Employees represented by the union at Grand Tower and Newton Power Stations will be expected back to work beginning at 11 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 28. Some employees may return in a few days after these dates due to previous commitments or other circumstances, Dodd said.
Dodd also said there was no agreement to return to work, but he expected that most employees would report at their normal starting times. The terms the company put into effect for the return were the same terms that existed at the time of the lockout, with some differences with respect to wages and benefits.
The utility also expects that employees represented by the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) Local 148 will return to work at the Meredosia, Grand Tower, Hutsonville and Coffeen Power Stations beginning with the 11 p.m. shift on Saturday, Aug. 28.
On June 21, CIPS and IUOE Local 148 signed a tentative three-year collective bargaining agreement. IUOE Local 148-represented employees then engaged in a sympathy strike and began honoring 702 pickets at the power stations.
CIPS provides electric service to 315,000 customers in 557 communities within a 20,000 square-mile area of central and southern Illinois. Natural gas service is furnished to about 163,000 customers in 267 communities within that same region.
