CENTRAL BANKS CONOVER RESIGNS; WESTERN CAPITAL'S MALONE TO BECOME HEAD OF FIRST BANK SYSTEM'S COLORADO AFFILIATES UPON APPROVAL OF ACQUISITION
Yohannes Named Acting President of Central Bancorporation
MINNEAPOLIS, June 9 /PRNewswire/ -- First Bank System, Inc. (NYSE: FBS) today announced that Robert J. Malone would become president and chief executive officer of Central Bancorporation, the holding company for FBS' combined Colorado banking affiliates. Malone will succeed C. Todd Conover, who has elected to resign and seek opportunities outside of First Bank System. Malone is currently chairman, president and chief executive officer of Western Capital Investment Corporation (NASDAQ: WECA), parent of Bank Western in Colorado. He would assume the position upon regulatory approval of First Bank System's previously announced acquisition of Western Capital.
During the interim, Daniel W. Yohannes will act as president of Central Bancorporation. Yohannes joined Central Bank as general manager of retail banking in April 1992. He was previously associated with Security Pacific Bank in Seattle, where he served as executive vice president of retail banking.
Malone joined Western Capital in April 1990 as chairman and CEO. Prior to that time he was president and CEO of First Interstate Bank of Denver. He began his banking career in 1969 at Bank of America and served as senior vice president and senior administrative officer for the North American Division from 1979 to 1981. In 1981 he was named president and CEO of First Interstate Bank of Idaho and joined First Interstate Bank of Denver as president and CEO in 1984.
"Bob is a proven leader who has accomplished a great deal during his time at Western Capital and throughout his banking career," said William F. Farley, vice chairman of First Bank System. "He knows this market well and he is an ideal choice to take over the leadership of the combined banks. Bob's strong commercial background combined with Daniel's retail expertise leaves us well positioned to run the best banking franchise in Colorado."
In April of this year, First Bank System and Western Capital announced that they had signed a purchase agreement whereby FBS would acquire the Denver-based Western Capital which owns Bank Western, a Federal Savings Bank, with 35 Colorado branches. The acquisition is pending approvals from Western Capital shareholders and regulators.
First Bank System is a regional bank holding company headquartered in Minneapolis with assets of $18.0 billion. Central Bancorporation has 35 branch offices in Colorado.
