CENTENNIAL OF NIGHT FOOTBALL CELEBRATED IN NEW GE COMMERCIAL
FAIRFIELD, Conn., Sept. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- A new GE commercial celebrating the 100th anniversary of the first night football game makes its national television debut Monday, September 28, during the second quarter of ABC's Monday Night Football broadcast.
The commercial, produced by advertising agency BBDO, commemorates the first night game which was played Sept. 28, 1892, on a crudely lit field in Mansfield, Pa. GE, barely 13 years after Edison's invention of electric light, provided the lighting and the power generation for the competition. At the time of the contest between Mansfield State (now Mansfield University) and Wyoming (Pa.) Seminary, both electricity and football were still experimental.
Directed by the award-winning Joe Pytka, the filming required several hundred actors and extras, intricate nighttime shooting and re-creation of both old-time and modern football settings.
The storyline moves from the original, nostalgic football contest to today's Arrowhead Stadium, where the Kansas City Chiefs will be hosting The Los Angeles Raiders as the commercial makes its debut.
General Electric is a world leader in sports and other outdoor lighting. In addition to Kansas City's Arrowhead Stadium, GE provides lighting systems for landmarks including Chicago's Wrigley Field, the Tower of London, the Statue of Liberty, Mount Rushmore, and Rio de Janeiro's Christ statue.
