CELLULARONE CUSTOMERS AMONG THE FIRST TO RECEIVE NEW AREA CODE FOR NEW YORK CITY

 CELLULARONE CUSTOMERS AMONG THE FIRST TO RECEIVE NEW AREA CODE
 FOR NEW YORK CITY
 PARAMUS, N.J., April 21 /PRNewswire/ -- CellularONE announced that it began assigning the new 917 area code on Monday, April 20, to its new cellular phone customers who requested a New York City area code.
 The New York State Public Service Commission (PSC) mandated the new 917 area code specifically for New York City cellular phones and pagers in order to meet the increasing demand for telephone numbers for business and personal use. Due to the tremendous popularity of telecommunications equipment such as cellular phones, fax machines and pagers, New York Telephone's supply of 212 and 718 area code telephone numbers is being steadily drained.
 Since 1985, just the cellular industry's customer base, including that of CellularONE, has increased 35 to 40 percent annually.
 The plan to introduce the new area code was adopted by the PSC in 1990 as a long-term, 12-year project affecting radio common carriers including CellularONE, NYNEX Mobile, other cellular service providers and all pager companies.
 "We want to make the introduction of the new area code as simple and easy as possible for our customers," said Tim Donahue, CellularONE president and general manager. "A major focus of our efforts is to inform our customers that calls to and from the 917 area code will be considered local calls. CellularONE customers will not be charged long- distance rates for 917 calls because the area code is within our local service area."
 To minimize confusion, CellularONE will phase in the introduction of 917.
 The phased plan includes:
 -- Issuing the 917 area code to all new CellularONE customers who need a New York City area code;
 -- Providing a recording to notify callers if the 212 or 718 area code they have dialed has been changed to 917;
 -- Converting the phone numbers of current CellularONE customers who have a 212 or 718 area code.
 Later this year, 212 and 718 customers who want upgraded equipment, a tuneup or teleconversion will be encouraged to convert their phone number to the 917 area code. Reprogramming of their cellular phone will be performed free-of-charge. Only the customer's area code will be changed; their seven-digit number will remain the same.
 Under the PSC plan, CellularONE is required to turn back all its assigned 212 cellular numbers by Jan. 2, 1998. All its 718 numbers must be returned by Dec. 31, 2004.
 In New York, CellularONE serves the five boroughs of New York City, Suffolk and Nassau counties on Long Island, and Westchester, Putnam and Rockland counties. In New Jersey, it serves Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Morris, Passaic, Somerset, and Union counties.
 CellularONE'S parent companies, McCaw Cellular Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: MCAWA), and LIN Broadcasting (NASDAQ: LINB) which is 52 percent owned by McCaw, are the nation's leading cellular service providers. McCaw has ownership positions in more than 100 cities across the country.
