CELLULAR TELEPHONES POPULAR IN WASHINGTON STATE DESPITE RECESSION,
 CELLULAR ONE SAYS
SEATTLE, Sept. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- In the face of a national recession, the cellular industry continued its strong growth pattern by reporting a 17.7-percent increase in customers over the first six months of 1992, Cellular One said today. According to a report issued by the Cellular Telephone Industry Association (CTIA), there are now 8.9 million cellular customers nationwide.
The industry statement reflected similar growth patterns in Washington state, according to Cellular One of Washington. Cellular One's parent corporation, McCaw Cellular (NASDAQ: MCAWA), reports a 38-percent increase in customers over a year ago.
Thomas E. Wheeler, CTIA's president and chief executive officer said of the industry's growth, "This is the largest number of subscribers ever added during a six-month period, and the equivalent of an almost 40-percent annual growth rate. This spectacular growth has been fueled by cellular's expansion into every one of the 734 license areas.
"Obviously we are quite pleased at the growth experienced in Washington state," said Robert H. Johnson, general manager of Cellular One of Washington. "Despite the recessionary environment, people are learning to maximize their time and productivity, and cellular voice and data tools are what they are turning to. We are committed to continue bringing the people of Washington state the best cellular network available in terms of increased coverage and technology," said Johnson.
The CTIA report also announced a 16.2-percent increase in employment among cellular carriers raising the total number of American's employed in the cellular industry to 26,327. Cellular One employs nearly 500 people in Seattle, Tacoma, Everett, Yakima, Tri-Cities and Spokane.
Other highlights of the report include cumulative capital investment climbed to more than $9 billion, roaming revenue (subscribers away from home) increased to $437 million for the six months of the year, and the average monthly bill continued to drop to $68.51 as of June 30.
CTIA is the trade association of the cellular industry, representing carriers that serve more than 95 percent of America's cellular subscribers. The association conducts a nationwide survey of cellular carriers every six months.
Cellular One of Washington is the leading cellular communications company in the state, providing continuous coverage from Vancouver, British Columbia, south to Ashland, Ore., and along the I-90 corridor from Seattle to Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.
