CELLULAR TELEPHONE SERVICE NOW AVAILABLE IN BOSTON'S TUNNELS
BOSTON, Feb. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- NYNEX Mobile Communications Company today activated cellular telephone service in the Callahan and Sumner Tunnels. For the first time, drivers can now conduct uninterrupted calls when traveling through the tunnels between Boston and Logan Airport and the North Shore.
To provide tunnel service, the company installed specially-designed mile-long "antennas" that receive and transmit cellular calls. Only callers on the NYNEX Mobile system can be sure of maintaining, receiving and making calls for the entire length of the tunnels.
"Working closely with the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority, NYNEX Mobile was able to make service in the tunnels a reality," said Barry Wynkoop, vice president and general manager for NYNEX Mobile's New England Service area. "Coverage in the tunnels is extremely important to area cellular telephone users. Not only is NYNEX Mobile first to meet this demand, but we are doing so with the highest quality service possible."
Providing tunnel service that met NYNEX Mobile's high quality standards required innovative engineering. The system is designed around a slotted coaxial cable that extends the length of the tunnel. Essentially a mile-long antenna, this cable transmits and receives cellular signals to and from cellular telephone users in the tunnel.
"This innovative design approach was tested and found to be preferable to other methods," said Wynkoop. "NYNEX Mobile is confident that this system design, the first of its kind for cellular use in North America, will provide high quality cellular service throughout the tunnel."
Based in Orangeburg, N.Y., and with a regional office in Woburn, Mass., NYNEX Mobile Communications Company is one of the nation's leading providers of wirefree telecommunications services. The 1,200- employee company provides cellular telephone service to more than 300,000 customers in the Northeast and owns and operates 26 retail centers in the region.
