CELLULAR ONE OF CHICAGO TO LAUNCH TDMA DIGITAL CELLULAR SERVICE
ERICSSON GE, MOTOROLA AND CELLULAR ONE WILL WORK TOGETHER
SCHAUMBURG, Ill., Dec. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Southwestern Bell Corp.'s (NYSE: SBC) Cellular One of Chicago announced today that in conjunction with Ericsson GE and Motorola, it will begin the deployment of TDMA (time division multiple access) digital cellular service with a verification program scheduled to begin in January 1992.
"The program will be the first step in introducing our Chicago customers to digital service," said Bob Nelson, general manager and president for Cellular One. "It will give us the opportunity to fine tune the technology before we deploy it throughout the rest of our Chicago system. This ensures a smooth introduction of this state-of- the-art advancement to our customers."
Results from the verification program will be used to finalize Cellular One's roll out of TDMA digital service in Chicago targeted for mid 1992. Initially, 60 users will participate in the program using dual-mode phones supplied by Motorola. Ericsson GE will provide the digital radio equipment to be installed in eight cell sites in the Schaumburg area.
"The initial tests of Ericsson's TDMA digital equipment in Los Angeles are going very well," Nelson said. "And we were particularly impressed with the results of the evaluation of Motorola's dual-mode cellular phones conducted in Dallas."
Southwestern Bell Mobile Systems was the first cellular company in the United States to announce its plans to deploy digital cellular service. In addition to Chicago, Mobile Systems plans to introduce TDMA digital in Dallas, Washington, Baltimore and Boston during 1992.
Cellular One of Chicago is a division of Southwestern Bell Mobile Systems which provides service to more than 870,000 customers in 28 metropolitan markets in the United States. Southwestern Bell Mobile Systems' service areas, including those pending regulatory approval, represent 35.6 million potential customers. The company is a subsidiary of Southwestern Bell Corp. (NYSE: SBC).
