CELLULAR ONE MARKS FIVE YEARS OF UNPRECEDENTED GROWTH
PITTSBURGH, Feb. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- In a period marked by stagnant economic growth, Cellular One has experienced five years of exceptional expansion, the company said today.
Cellular One, part of McCaw Communications, the nation's leading cellular communications company, began locally with two engineers operating out of their garage to build a fledgling cellular system, with a customer base dominated by technophiles willing to spend thousands of dollars for equipment weighing several pounds. Today, Cellular One employs over 200 western Pennsylvanians who operate one of the country's most sophisticated cellular networks and serves customers from every walk of life who have discovered the peace of mind and safety benefits that come from having access to instant communication.
The growth of the cellular industry has been extraordinary -- generating more than $5.55 billion in service revenue and over $700 million in equipment sales during 1991 alone. Consumers are signing up for cellular service in record numbers, attracted by declining equipment costs, new portable phones small enough to fit into shirt pockets and greatly expanded service areas. As of year-end 1991, the McCaw system served more than 1.1 million people nationwide -- one out of every 5 cellular customers.
Cellular One locally has experienced growth rates of over 30 percent each year over the last five years, investing approximately $50 million to continually expand and enhance its coverage. In order to respond to the rapidly increasing number of customers, the company offers 24-hour local customer service and opened Cellular One Service Centers for more convenient access to phone and accessory sales as well as repair by trained and certified technicians. In addition to having their own direct and Major Accounts sales teams, Cellular One is represented by a network of over 70 dealers throughout the region who sell equipment activated on Cellular One's network.
Given industry projections regarding cellular growth, these investments in expansion appear to be prudent. Data indicate the market is now moving beyond traditional end users -- small business owners, construction companies, professionals, etc. -- to more personal use. It is projected that by 1993, one out of every three cellular phones will be sold for non-business use.
The general public is becoming increasingly aware of the advantages cellular communications offers when trouble arises, a major attitudinal change from cellular's initial perception as a "yuppie" plaything. In addition to making better use of the business person's time or calling for a tow truck on a snowy evening, cellular is helping transmit EKG results from an ambulance to a hospital, offering "911" service from cellular in areas that do not have the capability via traditional land-line telephone and, of special interest to Cellular One, helping the physically and mentally challenged regain a measure of independence.
Through voluntary efforts, fund-raising and technical adaptations of their service, Cellular One has taken their company's motto -- Imagine No Limits -- and made it their commitment to the disabled. The vast technological and human resources Cellular One has available and the company's genuine commitment to contribute back to the communities in which they live and work, provides a strong foundation for assisting these individuals to become more fully assimilated into the fabric of society.
The diversity of its application has made cellular an integral part of many people's lives -- a fact that bodes well for Cellular One's continued growth over the next five years.
