CELLULAR COMMUNICATIONS INTERNATIONAL AND STERLING COMPUTERS NAMED IN INDIAN PRESS REPORTS AS RECIPIENTS OF ONE OF NEW DELHI CELLULAR LICENSES

NEW YORK, Aug. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Cellular Communications International, Inc. (CCII) (NASDAQ: CCIL) stated that in today's editions of two Indian newspapers, published reports have appeared indicating that the Indian government's Department of Telecommunications (DOT) has named Sterling Cellular Ltd. as the recipient of one of two GSM cellular licenses for the Indian city of New Delhi. Sterling Cellular Ltd. is a joint venture company owned 50 percent by Sterling Computers Ltd. of Madras, India and 50 percent by CCII. As of today's date, neither CCII nor Sterling Computers Ltd. has received any official notice from the DOT.
CCII had previously announced in October of 1992 that Sterling Cellular had been provisionally awarded one of two GSM cellular licenses for the city of Madras. This decision, together with all of the license awards for the cities of Bombay, Delhi, Calcutta and Madras, was successfully challenged in the Delhi High Court, and the DOT was subsequently ordered to re-evaluate these awards and the applications of the two petitioners.
According to Thomas Tesluk, senior vice president of CCII, today's press reports in Indian Express and Economic Times indicate that the DOT has completed its re-evaluation and decided on the license awards in accordance with the instructions of the Delhi High Court. The reports also indicate that at least one of the affected parties is threatening to petition the Supreme Court to move against the DOT decision. Therefore it appears likely that today's reported decision will lead to additional court challenges and further delay. No assurances can be given as to the accuracy of the press reports or the outcome of any future proceedings.
