CELEBRITY CRUISES ENTERS A NEW ERA OF EXPANSION WITH ITS NEW 'CENTURY' SERIES

NEW YORK, March 30 /PRNewswire/ -- As previously announced, Celebrity Cruises has signed contracts with Jos. L. Meyer Gmbh & Co. in Papenburg, Germany to build up to three 1,740-passenger vessels between 1995 and 1997, inaugurating the line's second phase of expansion with a new "Century" class of vessels.
The Century Series' first 70,000-ton, 800-foot vessel, which will be introduced in November 1995, will sail year-round from Fort Lauderdale to the Eastern and Western Caribbean. The second and third sister ships are planned to be introduced in Fall 1996 and Fall 1997, respectively.
"With the contract for the Century Series, Celebrity Cruises is entering its second phase of expansion with a new era of ships designed to appeal to the sophisticated tastes and lifestyles of discerning passengers for decades to come," according to John Chandris, the line's chairman.
"The Phase 1 trio of Celebrity ships has demonstrated that a cruise product can deliver an exceptionally high level of service if the line pays close attention to details and guests' needs," Mr. Chandris said. "The future of our industry and its ability to grow depends upon a high level of product delivery."
Like the first generation of Celebrity Cruises vessels, the first Century ship profile will be created by the famous yacht designer John Bannenberg. In addition, renowned master-chef Michel Roux will contribute to the design and development of the new ships' food service, building on the award-winning cuisine that is already a tradition aboard the Meridian, Horizon and Zenith.
With a lower-berth capacity of 1,740 passengers, the first Century vessel will offer a passenger-space ratio of 40.2, allowing for maximum passenger comfort. The Century ships will offer 48 percent more space and will accommodate 26 percent more passengers than the first generation of Celebrity ships.
Of the ship's 870 cabins, 561 will be outside, with 54 offering private verandas. All cabins will have the same flexibility as those on the first Celebrity ships, with convertible twin beds.
The ship's two Presidential suites -- which will be the largest in the industry -- will offer 1,076 square feet of space. A private living area, perfect for in-cabin entertaining, will have a wet bar, and a sophisticated entertainment center. The gracious home atmosphere will include a separate dining area where the restaurant's service and cuisine may be delivered at the guest's request. Floor-to-ceiling windows will open to a private veranda and offer unprecedented ocean views. The personal dressing area will include a walk-in closet and marble bath with twin sinks, shower and oversized whirlpool bath.
Twelve Century suites are designed with large living areas, dressing rooms, and floor-to-ceiling windows opening private verandas. The bedroom, with twins convertible to a king-sized bed, has an ocean view.
Amenities of the 31 Celebrity Suites include a comfortable sitting area and marble bath fitted with whirlpool jets.
The first Century ship will continue Celebrity's standards for passenger comfort. Like the HORIZON and ZENITH, the Century Series' standard cabins will measure 172 square feet, providing generous closets and drawer space as well as large bathrooms.
The formal restaurant will be two levels with sweeping ocean views. A majestic staircase creates a grand entrance in the dining room, which will serve up to 1,100 passengers at each of two seatings.
Complementing this new design will be a unique galley that pairs two galley operations, each to serve half of the dining room, to insure that Celebrity's award-winning standards of cuisine and service will be met.
A two-level Lido Cafe will offer casual dinning alternatives, including five buffets, a grill room and separate outdoor dining cafe, adding up to the largest casual area designated for cruising.
In creating the first Century ship's two deck main showroom Celebrity Cruises is making the industry's largest advanced technology investment to date. The amphitheater-style showroom will offer unobstructed views for 1,000 passengers per seating.
In addition to offering the latest in live entertainment, the first Century ship will cater to a diverse range of passenger interests with a number of other indoor entertainment options, such as an observation lounge and disco, a two-deck casino, nightclubs, the Rendezvous Lounge area, and extensive facilities for young passengers.
A new feature aboard the Century Series ships will be a flexible conference space and cinema, catering to the growing meetings and incentive market. In addition, a Grand Foyer will feature a three-deck grand staircase as well as a shopping gallery and champagne bar.
For active passengers interested in more physical pursuits, Century Series passengers will be able to enjoy a number of recreational areas, including a state-of-the art health club and spa with whirlpools and saunas, massage rooms, advanced gyms, aerobics room, golf simulator, mud and Turkish baths and beauty salon.
For those interested in outdoor activities, the Century Series vessels' spacious open decks -- which will offer over 62,000 square feet of space -- will feature two swimming pools, whirlpools, a jogging track and a designated area for active sports. In addition to a broad selection of onboard activities, the Century Series' larger scale will allow for more spacious public entertainment and recreational areas, totalling more the 4.5 acres. The ship's combined entertainment space, including the theater, nightclub, and lounges, will total more than 120,000 square feet of interior space.
