CELEBRITY CELEBRATION: INDUSTRY SUCCESS IS NO MIRAGE
--Industry Once "Praised By Faint Damning" Proves Recession-Proof
Favorite of Celebrities, Consumers Alike --
LAS VEGAS, Oct. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- The thrill of victory had little

to do with the lure of the ubiquitous slot machines in the Mirage Hotel here tonight, as members of the National Infomercial Marketing Association (NIMA) gathered to celebrate their industry's staggering and rapid success. The $1 billion infomercial industry -- which has proven virtually recession proof during its nine-year history -- had much to cheer as it honored its over-achievers with awards in 11 categories.
The glittering extravaganza was hosted by Angie Dickinson and produced by network television veteran Earl Greenburg, of Transactional Media, Inc. The evening paid tribute to the industry and its scores of talented professionals. The NIMA Awards are voted by members of the association, by secret ballot. The honorees include the following:
Best Writing: Lennie Lieberman, Tony Robbins and Jon Schulberg for
 Tony Robbins' Personal Power.
 Best Female Presenter: Victoria Jackson.
 Best Male Presenter: Mike Levey.
 Best Product: Jet Stream Oven.
Best Demonstration Show: Jet Stream Oven.
Best Directing: Robert Thompson, Soloflex Heros; Chad Murdock,
Hooked on Phonics; and Ken Kerry, Hooked on Phonics.
Best Documercial: Tony Robbins' Personal Power; and Where's There's
 A Will There's An A.
 Best Product: Soloflex Heros.
Best Offer: Lori Davis Hair Care, Focus On Beauty I.
Infomercial of the Year: Tony Robbins Personal Power.
 Special Recognition: Dave Del Dotto
An additional special award was voted for H. Ross Perot, in recognition of the impact his use of the infomercial format is having in the current political arena.
-- You Can See The Future --
"Frankly, this industry is one that is often 'praised by faint damning,'" says Tom Fenton, head of Soliton Communications and NIMA co- founder. "I believe, however, that Perot's success illustrates many of the strengths of the format. You can see the future of the infomercial format beyond the marketing of products and into the world of ideas."
According to Greg Renker, another industry insider, NIMA co-founder and president of Guthy-Renker, "Perot makes it look simple, but there's a great deal of craft that goes into infomercials. There's a discipline and a rigor involved that's built us to the point where we're a $1 billion industry and now one which is fundamentally altering the American political agenda."
