CEI: 2,500TH REFRIGERATOR RECYCLED

CLEVELAND, Dec. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- "Refrigerator Roundup," an innovative energy reduction and recycling program sponsored by the Cleveland Electric Illuminating Company (CEI) and Toledo Edison, today is lasso-ing its 2,500th inefficient, second refrigerator.
"We're pleased with customer response to the program since it began in July," said William Ridmann, CEI's marketing services director. "These electricity-wasters are being rounded up and recycled at a record pace." Ridmann cites the following positive benefits of "Refrigerator Roundup":
-- The program gives CEI customers a hassle-free way to have an inefficient, second refrigerator removed from their homes -- a benefit of particular value to older customers with second refrigerators located in the basement of the home.
-- Customers save, on average, over $150 per year on energy costs by removing a seldom-used second appliance. CEI estimates customers have saved more than 2,600,000 kilowatthours of electricity since the program's inception.
-- The program is environmentally friendly: More than 1,400 lbs. of chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) and sulfur dioxide (SO2) refrigerants have been recycled since July, preventing their release into the atmosphere.
-- More than 630,000 lbs. of steel and 2,500 lbs. of aluminum have been recycled through a local scrap dealer.
 To schedule a pick-up, customers can call 800-LASSO-IT (527-7648).
"Refrigerator Roundup" is one of more than a dozen energy efficiency programs offered by the Illuminating Company and Toledo Edison, both wholly owned subsidiaries of Centerior Energy (NYSE: CX).
