CDI'S SELF-SERVE SOFTWARE PROVIDES FIRST TURNKEY SOLUTION FOR ELECTRONIC COMMERCE

Transparent On-Line Transactions Achieved With Internet Enhanced
 (ActiveX)Controls

ISSAQUAH, Wash., March 12 /PRNewswire/ -- In the past, the user-friendliness of electronic commerce was hampered by the need to navigate in and out of the on-line shopping catalog to process transactions. Now a new technology from Washington-based CDI Commerce Direct International Inc. uses the new ActiveX(TM) Control component of Microsoft(R)'s ActiveX technologies to make on-line transactions appear as if they are part of an existing Web page, providing the first transparent solution for electronic commerce.

By using ActiveX controls' new features for Internet applications, CDI's Self Serve Software technology enables merchants selling over the Internet to hand over credit card authorizations and other transaction tasks to CDI's Electronic Commerce Service Bureau without visibly going
off-line. This is possible because merchants can include Self Serve Software's ActiveX control in their Web page and link HTML 3.0 calls directly to the ActiveX control, which in turn calls the CDI server via the Internet.

The ActiveX control then takes the customer's name and address information securely off the PC, encrypts it and passes it into a secure digital envelope that sends it over the Internet to the CDI server. The server decrypts the data, obtains credit card authorization over private T1 phone lines and sends the results back to the Web page. All these steps take place transparently in the background, enabling the user to purchase goods effortlessly without leaving the Web site.

"The Internet-enhanced ActiveX Controls have made it possible for us to make Internet shopping easy and practical for the first time," said CDI President Gerry Bakker. "The ability to add language- and tool-independent scripting and extensibility to Web pages is an important new tool for developers of Internet software in general and for on-line merchants in particular."CDI's service represents a turnkey electronic commerce solution that is particularly attractive for software vendors because end-users can not only order and pay for software on-line but receive the products they order electronically.

It also serves as an effective solution to software piracy because it locks the paid - software to a specific computer as identified by a unique GUID electronic serial number generated by the operating system. If the software is copied to an unauthorized machine, the Self Serve Software server will foil the interloper by time-bombing the program or releasing it in a crippled mode predefined by the software vendor. These safeguards not only promise to increase registration revenues but also make CDI's service the first practical system for software rental.

The service also includes proprietary encryption, revenue capture and on-line registration. "CDI is an excellent example of a company that is leveraging ActiveX Controls Internet technology to create useful and needed solutions for the marketplace," said Doug Henrich, Director of Microsoft's Developer Relations Group. As one of the first companies supporting ActiveX Controls built into the Microsoft ActiveX technology, CDI is helping companies to realize the full benefits of the Internet."
