CDFA DIRECTOR SETS HEARINGS ON ALL COMMODITY EDUCATION PROGRAM

SACRAMENTO, Calif., Aug. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Henry Voss, director of the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA), has officially scheduled a series of six public hearings on a proposal to establish a public education program on agriculture. The program would be paid for by growers of all agricultural commodities in the state.
The purpose of the program is to inform the general public on the importance of agriculture to their daily lives, the issues faced by farmers in producing an abundant supply of wholesome food at affordable prices, and the economic impact agriculture has on the state's economy in terms of jobs and income.
Said Voss, "It is my hope that all interested parties will attend the hearings and provide input. The decision on whether to establish this program must be made with the best information available."
The program sets the level of assessment at $1 for every $2,000 of commodity field value, raising an estimated $8 million a year.
If the program is implemented, a 39-person grower board would decide how the program's budget would be spent.
The hearings have been scheduled around the state with the first to be held Sept. 29 in the Hugh Burns State Building, Room 1036, 2550 Mariposa Mall, Fresno. Other hearings will be held in Salinas, Sacramento, Anderson, El Centro and Ventura. All of the hearings are scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. (See schedule below).
Official notifications will be sent Monday to almost 1,200 agricultural organizations announcing the six hearings. Public notices will also be placed in specific newspapers.
For more information on the hearings, contact the CDFA Communications Office at 916-654-0462.
