CDFA ANNOUNCES ANOTHER GUAVA FRUIT FLY FOUND IN SACRAMENTO; ADDITIONAL TRAPS ARE DEPLOYED IN FIND AREA

SACRAMENTO, Calif., July 22 /PRNewswire/ -- The California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) today announced that another Guava fruit fly was found in a Sacramento County residential area, near Fair Oaks Boulevard and San Juan Avenue.
The male Guava fruit fly was trapped Tuesday in a peach tree in Fair Oaks.
Late last month, two Guava fruit flies were found less than a mile from each other in residential areas near Power Inn Road and 14th Avenue in South Sacramento.
In response to this recent fly find, CDFA crews, working cooperatively with Sacramento County Agricultural Commissioner Frank Carl, have begun deploying additional traps in the area.
In the 81-square-mile area surrounding the location of the find, state and county crews will deploy about 425 traps to determine the extent of this infestation.
The Guava fruit fly causes damage to host fruits such as mangos, peaches and citrus. Established in India, Pakistan, Nepal and Thailand, the Guava fruit fly's first discovery in the western hemisphere was in Garden Grove in 1986.
Since then, there have been 14 other Guava fruit flies found in California, including this recent one in Sacramento.
