The viewer is using the first CD-ROM title to use multimedia to teach users about multimedia. Introduced today by Zone Publishing at the opening of COMDEX/Spring and Windows World in booth No. 6433. "The Guided Tour of Multimedia" is a comprehensive, interactive guide filled with nearly 20 hours of course material. The program uses audio and video clips, informational graphics and animation to illustrate current multimedia technology.
"`The Guided Tour of Multimedia' covers multimedia from the fundamentals to the intricacies, allowing novice users and multimedia professionals alike to experience multimedia first hand while learning how to incorporate it into everyday communications," explained Angela Aber, co-founder of Zone Publishing.
Chuck Cortright, Zone Publishing co-founder, expects the title to accelerate the acceptance of multimedia as a viable business communications tool. "A large number of users purchased a CD-ROM for playing software titles only. We hope that by showing them the power of multimedia they will take the next step -- purchasing multimedia equipment for their everyday business practices," he said.
"The Guided Tour" is authored by the award-winning development team at the Graphix Zone. Zone Publishing also allied itself with Multimedia World, a bimonthly publication of IDG Communications, to bring this CD-ROM title to the market.
"Our readers are interested in obtaining the latest information about this evolving technology," said Jonathan Epstein, publisher of Multimedia World. "The title's in-depth approach makes it an ideal teaching aid or reference CD for anybody who'd love having the world of multimedia at their fingertips."
"The Guided Tour's" main screen is an electronic desktop with six category buttons representing chapters; each chapter contains various multimedia topics. The user can also fast-forward from the main screen to an interactive index, glossary and library of video and audio clips.
"`The Guided Tour' covers the gamut of multimedia hardware and software technologies, both types of products users can buy and how to evaluate their features," said Al Phillips, the CD's project director.
Classified by category (drives, sound boards, monitors), each item is accompanied by an encyclopedic description, narration describing the component and animation or video clips illustrating how each component works.
The minimum configuration to run the CD-ROM is a 386SX MPC- configured system running Windows 3.x with multimedia extensions. "The Guided Tour of Multimedia" is available immediately and has a list price of $49.95.
Zone Publishing is dedicated to education through multimedia and CD-ROM. The company targets the more than $4 billion CD-ROM market with titles for both consumers and corporate users.
