CD-ROM EXPO '91 DRAWS MORE THAN 5,500 ATTENDEES FRAMINGHAM, Mass., Nov. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- More than 5,500 users
of CD-ROM applications and multimedia computing applications on compact disc gathered at the 5th annual CD-ROM Expo, held Oct. 15-17 at the Washington Hilton and Towers in Washington, D.C.
Over 70 exhibitors displayed their latest CD-ROM and multimedia products. Companies participating included: 3M Optical Recording; ASEC International, Inc.; Dataware Technologies, Inc.; dataDisc; Fujitsu Ltd.; Fulcrum Technologies Inc.; Hitachi Multimedia Systems; IBM Corporation; ID MS; Meridian Data, Inc.; Pioneer Communications of America; Sony Corporation of America; TMS, Inc.; Toshiba America Information Systems, Inc.; Disk Products Division, and many more. A highlight of the show was a special IBM briefing session for the national and international media which premiered IBM's "Columbus: Encounter, Discovery and Beyond," a multimedia program that couples a classroom computer with a laser disc and CD-ROM to allow children to explore Columbus, Indians and related topics via text, graphics and audio. Also featured at the show was the keynote address delivered by Jim Dezell, IBM vice president & general manager, IBM Educational Systems, with opening remarks by IBM vice president & general manager, Personal Systems, Jim Cannavino. Dezell explained, "I believe we're undergoing a dramatic change in the way that education is performed and knowledge is delivered in our society. And Columbus is a perfect metaphor for the changes that we'll see in education over the next four or five years." Several CD-ROM and multimedia products were also introduced at the show including Orange Cherry New-Media Schoolhouse's "Talking Classic Tales" and "Talking Jungle Safari" and "Annabel Stream of Ancient Egypt" and "Vital Signs: The Good Health Resource" produced by Texas Caviar, Inc., a division of Software Mart. "As more CD-ROM products are being created, it is important to bring together CD-ROM and multimedia users with the developers so that questions and concerns can be exchanged," said show manager, David Bradway. CD-ROM Expo '92 will be held Sept. 28 - Oct. 2 at the World Trade Center, Boston.
