CD REVIEWS: Mike Sanchez - Red Hot . . . Live! (Doopin Music / Ents.tv) (order from website only. pounds 16).
Once he was free from The Big Town Playboys, Mike Sanchez set about forming his own eight-piece ensemble, recruiting Andy Silvester - surely the Midlands' most undervalued blues guitarist - a foundermember of The BTPs from 1984-90, who came to fame with 60s twelvebar merchants Chicken Shack, baby-faced Al Gare on bull fiddle, formerly Slap Happy of Brum's King Pleasure & The Biscuit Boys, and, directing the three-man horn section, tenor-saxist Al Nicholls, another ex-Biscuit Boy and BTP alumnus.
Meanwhile, Sanchez was offered the piano chair with former Rolling Stone Bill Wyman's Rhythm Kings, with whom he's just concluded a 30 date tour, and he's just about to make a couple of rare local appearances in his own right, at Worcester's Huntingdon Hall on Saturday December 4 followed by Birmingham's Glee Club on Sunday 5.
His Red Hot . . Live! DVD, essentially an update of film maker Chris Wroe's 2001 VHS release, includes Sanchez's bill-topping show from The Burnley Blues Festival, with guest spots by rocker Paul Ansell, lovely Dublin chanteuse Imelda Clabby and black doo-wop trio The Extraordinaires, along with roughand-ready clips from London's 100 Club, shot in grainy black and white.
New to the DVD are half-a-dozen numbers from Shrewsbury's Jazz & Roots Club in December 2002, vividly capturing Sanchez and his swinging band in sweaty action. HHHH
