This course book is designed to be used with the Cisco Networking Academy's online course and Packet Tracer 4.1, a networking learning tool for network simulations games, and activities. The text of the course book is taken directly from the accompanying online course. Covering practical and conceptual fundamentals of networking, the book introduces the OSI and TCP/IP models of network planning, and presents networking using a top-down network layer approach, with chapters on the transport, OSI network, data link, and physical layers. Other topics covered include the Ethernet, and designing and cabling a network. A final chapter walks readers through connecting and configuring a small network using basic Cisco IOS commands for routers and switches. Pedagogical features include chapter objectives and summaries, reflection questions, links, an extensive glossary of about 20 pages, and margin prompts directing readers to figures, labs, and activities in the online course. There is no subject index.
