CBI to probe case of missing Rajasthan nurse.

Jaipur, Sep.15 (ANI): The Home Minister of Rajasthan, Shanti Dhariwal, has said that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) will probe the case of the missing nurse, Bhanwari Devi.

According media reports Devi, an Auxiliary Nurse and Midwife (ANM) from Jodhpur was having an illicit relationship with state cabinet minister Mahipal Maderna and has been missing for the past ten days.

Dhariwal told media here that he had spoken to Maderna and the CBI is likely to probe the matter.

"Since the name of a cabinet minister is emerging in connection with the issue- I have spoken to him (cabinet minister Mahipal Maderna), and he has said that if there are reports of his involvement, then an investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation should be made. And we have decided that the CBI will probe the matter," said Dhariwal.

A political storm engulfed Rajasthan, after Devi's husband Amarchand informed the media of his wife's disappearance and added that Maderna used to regularly speak to her over the telephone.

Amarchand had filed a kidnapping case when his wife did not return after she left her house to collect the payment of their recently sold car.

Media had reported that the nurse was missing since September 3 after a CD surfaced, wherein she was seen in a compromising position with Maderna.

Meanwhile, the opposition BJP has expressed dismay over the state government's failure to conduct a probe against Maderna.

BJP leader Om Birla said: "I suspect that she has been murdered. Who all are involved in this? Since the past many days her husband has been saying that a cabinet minister used to regularly talk to his wife over the telephone. There are allegations against a cabinet minister."

He added: The government has so far failed to decide if the cabinet minister is involved in this case or not. She has been murdered and there can't be a more heinous crime. The state government has to clarify that any of its cabinet minister is not involved in the incident or it would be considered that the government is trying to suppress the issue by protecting its minister."

Rajasthan Police teams have been sent to Jhansi and Auraiya in Uttar Pradesh after it was reported that Devi's body was found.

However, the body is yet to be identified.

Devi belonged to the lower caste potter community. Her alleged gang rape and court drama in 1992 had attracted extensive media attention, both at the national and international level.

She later gained widespread support and was even invited to the United Nations Fourth World Conference on women in China. (ANI)
