CATHAY PACIFIC ORDERS SIX AIRBUS A340s, LEASES FOUR MORE

HERNDON, Va., Dec. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Cathay Pacific Airways has selected the new generation ultra-long range A340 to play a major role in its fleet development program, following a decision to order six A340-300s, valued at more than $800 million, and to lease four A340-200s, Airbus Industrie announced.
The leased A340-200s will be the first to enter service with the Hong Kong-based carrier when deliveries begin in October 1994 and conclude by March 1995. They will progressively be replaced by the larger A340-300s, deliveries of which begin in July 1996 and stretch into 1997.
The A340 is powered by four CFM International CFM56-5C engines. Cathay will use the A340s to Europe, linking Hong Kong with Amsterdam, Paris, Rome and Zurich. Both versions of the aircraft will be configured in a luxurious three-class cabin, accommodating 233 passengers in the -200 and 260 in the -300.
Cathay Pacific Airways Chairman Peter Sutch said: "Our customers want non-stop services to a range of European destinations, and the A340 is perfect for this. Although Cathay, and indeed the entire airline industry, is currently facing difficult times, we believe this is a good time to buy aircraft," he said, "because we foresee a better business environment in the second half of the decade."
The introduction of the A340 into Cathay's fleet has additional benefits because of the high degree of commonality with A330 aircraft to be delivered starting in January 1995. Cathay has firm orders for 10 A330s, all of which will be delivered before the end of 1996. To date, Airbus Industrie has recorded some 400 commitments for the A330/A340 family, including 241 firm orders from 35 customers.
