CATERPILLAR STATEMENT

PEORIA, Ill., Nov. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Caterpillar Vice President Wayne Zimmerman issued the following statement at 8:15 p.m. CST Sunday, Nov. 14:
"We're pleased that our employees have done whatever they needed to do to end this ill-advised strike.
"It's regrettable employees, their families and our plant communities continue to be subjected to the uncertainty of this labor dispute. We are once again calling upon the Detroit union leadership to return to the bargaining table.
"That would be a far more productive course than the one taken over the past few days, which only served once again to put employees in a costly situation that could have been avoided. Employees who wanted no part of being on strike lost at least a day's pay. And we think they are in the strong majority -- as evidenced by the growing number who were continuing to report for work after the strikes were called. By the beginning of the weekend, that total had reached nearly 2,000.
"In addition to the lost pay, employees had a weekend of extreme uncertainty. It's tragic that our plant communities were put on notice they could be held hostage by the irresponsible actions of a few.
"The disruption to the company, lost personal income to our employees, and the anxiety it caused served no purpose whatsoever. The individual over whom the union claimed this strike started remains on indefinite suspension. His case will be reviewed in acordance with the appropriate procedures -- just as we offered to do before the strikes began Thursday night.
"This incident is further evidence the UAW leadership is out of tune with its members, and that employees would like nothing better than a signed agreement so they can get on with their lives.
"But again, we're pleased employees have taken the steps needed to end the strikes. We're glad it's over."
