CATERPILLAR SENDS LETTER TO UAW

 CATERPILLAR SENDS LETTER TO UAW
PEORIA, Ill., Feb. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Caterpillar Inc. (NYSE: CAT),

in an effort to resolve its labor dispute with the United Auto Workers union, today sent the following letter to B. J. Casstevens, secretary- treasurer and director of the UAW:
"In an effort to break the current deadlock between us, we are requesting a meeting of the central bargaining committee to occur the week of Feb. 17 -- any time that would be convenient for you.
"To avoid further location disputes, we ask that the meeting be held in the Bloomington/Normal area where previous central table meetings have occurred. We have already identified facilities appropriate for such a meeting which are available for each day from Monday, Feb. 17 through Saturday, Feb. 22. Or, if you prefer, we would agree to again meet at the UAW Local 2488 Union Hall.
"At this meeting, the company will submit important modifications to its current proposal.
"Please advise me as soon as possible the dates your bargaining committee would be available to meet. I suggest that Andy Anderson and Jerry Brust then arrange the specific time and location.
"As part of our effort to get beyond the present stalemate and as a sign of our good-faith desire to bring the current labor dispute to an early resolution, we are also announcing today that we are ending the lockouts at Aurora and East Peoria and informing employees to return to work on their regular shift beginning Sunday evening, Feb. 16."
The letter was signed by Caterpillar Vice President Wayne M. Zimmerman.
The lockout was called on Nov. 7 in response to selective strikes by the United Auto Workers union. The strikes, called on Nov. 3, continue at Caterpillar facilities in East Peoria and Decatur, Ill.
About 5,650 hourly employees were idled as a result of the company's lockout. The selective strikes called by the UAW continue to idle about 2,400 workers.
