CASTROL SEEKS INJUNCTION AGAINST PENNZOIL'S ADVERTISING CAMPAIGN
NEWARK, N.J., April 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Castrol Inc. announced that it has filed suit against Pennzoil (NYSE: PZL) Company in federal court in Newark, New Jersy, seeking an order enjoining broadcast of Pennzoil's current motor oil advertising campaign. Arguement is scheduled for April 8, 1992, on Castrol's request for an immediate injunction pending a full hearing of Castrol's claims.
The challenged advertisements claim that Pennzoil motor oils "outperform" the competition "against viscosity breakdown" and that Pennzoil provides better protection against engine failure and shortened engine life.
The lawsuit asserts that Castrol motor oils equal or surpass Pennzoil motor oils in every recognized test for viscosity breakdown, and that there is no evidence of any kind to support Pennzoil's claims of better protection.
Edward J. Carhart, Castrol's Vice President of Marketing and Sales, said that "Castrol motor oils meet the world's toughest viscosity standards. We believe Pennzoil's superiority claims are baseless."
