CASTLE SPRING TO BEGIN MARKETING IN NEW ENGLAND
MANCHESTER, N.H., April 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Plans to bottle and

market natural spring water from a source some experts believe is among the purest and best-protected anywhere were announced today by a newly formed New Hampshire company, Castle Springs, L.P.
The water will go on sale initially in thousands of retail outlets throughout northern New England beginning in early June under the brand name Castle Springs. The new water will be distributed by Manchester- based Coca-Cola of Northern New England under the terms of an agreement entered into by the two companies. Coca-Cola of Northern New England distributes throughout Maine, the northern half of Vermont, most of New Hampshire and several northeastern counties of Massachusetts.
Castle Springs said it already has discussions underway with other companies to distribute the new bottled water brand in other regions.
Castle Springs pure natural spring water will be available in both still and sparkling versions and will be offered in a range of popular sizes. The new brand will enter the market positioned in the upper end of the mid-price range.
There has been growing skepticism among bottled water consumers who prefer pure natural spring water about the source of many brands and the accuracy of claims on labels and in ads.
"We have one of the purest and best-protected springs-known," said J. Paul Sticht, president and chief executive officer of Castle in the Clouds, Inc., the general managing partner of Castle Springs. "Our spring water emerges high in the middle of our property, forced to the surface by natural pressure through thousands of feet of volcanic rock. There are no structures or facilities above our springs and, due to the mountainous terrain and the size of our property, no surface water flows onto our land from property we don't own. The area surrounding our spring is a natural wonderland and we intend to keep it that way.
"We're proud of our source and we don't want people to have to take our word for its beauty. We want them to come and judge for themselves."
The brand's advertising campaign will feature photographs of the company's pristine mountain-site. Every ad and the label on every bottle will invite consumers to tour the company's new 20,000 square foot bottling facility and see the springs.
The springs are located in the Ossipee Mountains in Moultonborough, N.H. in the middle of more than 5,000 acres the company owns. Written references to the springs have appeared in documents of early explorers and pioneers as far back as the 1670's.
During a 12 month testing program conducted for the company by an independent firm, the spring source of Castle Springs demonstrated a strong dependable flow and consistently high quality. The tests proved the water is salt-free, extremely low in total dissolved solids (TDS) and remarkably clean and pure.
To be considered salt-free under FDA guidelines, bottled water must contain no more than 20 milligrams per liter of sodium. Castle Springs contains only 1.6 milligrams, or less than 10 percent of the guideline maximum level.
Some of the most popular European spring water contains hundreds of milligrams per liter of total dissolved solids and many springs in the United States have TDS levels of 1,000 milligrams per liter or more.
However, bottled water consumers in the United States have shown a strong preference for low TDS waters. Castle Springs has a TDS level of only 29 milligrams per liter, yet, the company said the mineral content is adequate to give the water the clean, refreshing taste consumers seek.
The company also said test were conducted for more than 150 of the most common herbicides, pesticides, petroleum-related hydrocarbons, chlorinated solvents and other organic compounds using methods capable of detecting as little as one-half part per billion. The tests were unable to detect the presence of any of the 150 substances even at trace levels.
The Castle Springs property is also the site of the well-known and popular tourist attraction Castle in the Clouds which offers tours of a famous mountaintop mansion, horseback riding, hiking, picnicking, wagon rides and some of the most spectacular outdoor scenery in New Hampshire.
This year, guests will also be invited to tour the new Castle Springs bottling facility and the actual spring site where Castle Springs water emerges into a natural white sand basin. Since acquiring the property, Castle Springs, L.P. has dramatically enhanced facilities. Extensive restoration efforts have been underway at the mansion. A new conference center and function room capable of seating up to 200 has been built and, the company is already accepting reservations for wedding receptions and other special events.
